Moscow and Washington compete for project of a new nuclear power plant in Armenia

February 10, Fineko/abc.az. The construction of a new nuclear power plant in Armenia remains important for relations between Moscow and Yerevan.

ABC.AZ reports that the Russian Foreign Affairs Ministry stated that Rosatom is ready to proceed with the project promptly and does not see reliable alternatives for Armenia in terms of conditions and operation.

At the same time, Nikol Pashinyan's government is considering the option of modular American-made nuclear power plants. On February 9, Armenia and the U.S. signed an agreement on cooperation in the field of peaceful atom, providing for investments of up to $9 billion.

Currently, the country has modernized nuclear power plant Soviet VVER-440 with extended service life until 2026 and the possibility of extension until 2036.
