August 26, Fineko/abc.az. Representatives of the US and Russian governments discussed several energy deals on the sidelines of negotiations held this month aimed at achieving peace in Ukraine.

According to ABC.AZ, citing sources, these deals were proposed as an incentive to encourage the Kremlin to agree to peace in Ukraine and for Washington to ease sanctions against Russia.

Officials discussed the possibility of Exxon Mobil returning to participation in Russia’s Sakhalin-1 oil and gas project. They also raised the issue of whether Russia could purchase American equipment for its LNG projects, such as Arctic LNG 2, which is under Western sanctions, four sources said. Another version suggested that the US was to acquire nuclear icebreakers from Russia, Reuters reported on August 15. The talks took place during US Ambassador Steve Witkoff’s visit to Moscow earlier this month, when he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin and his investment envoy Kirill Dmitriev, three sources reported. According to two sources, the discussions were also held at the White House with US President Donald Trump. According to one source, these deals were also briefly discussed at the Alaska summit on August 15.
