March 6, Fineko/abc.az. Slovak President Peter Pellegrini called legitimate the demand of the authorities of the republic to include in the EU summit’s final document a call for Ukraine to resume gas transit through its territory.

ABC.AZ informs that the head of state commented on the situation during a press conference in the Czech city of Slavkov. The event took place after the completion of the trilateral talks in Bratislava, Prague and Vienna.

As the Slovak leader said, he understands why Slovak PM Robert Fico suggested that the EU member states demand that Ukraine restore gas transit through its territory. At that, he clarified that it was about fuel supplies from Azerbaijan or other countries that would agree to a relevant deal.

"I consider this a legitimate manifestation of the protection of Slovakia's national interests," the president stressed.

Pellegrini added that Kiev could demonstrate its gratitude for the help from European countries by resuming gas transit.

"He (Fico) cannot go there and agree with everything and then watch the Slovak economy being destroyed," the head of state concluded.

An extraordinary EU summit is scheduled for March 6 and will be held in the Belgian capital. It is expected that the main theme of the event will be the approval of the "Rearm Europe" program. The latter involves an increase in the military potential of the member countries of the regional commonwealth, necessary to reduce dependence on the U.S. in the field of security, and the allocation of 800 billion euros for this purpose.
