January 24, Fineko/abc.az. French regulator CNIL, which oversees data protection, fined the local division of American Amazon.com Inc. in the field of warehouse management for €32 million for "excessive intrusion" into the privacy of staff.
ABC.AZ reports that according to the regulator, the division used parcel scanners to collect data on labor productivity and employee downtime.
The scanners tracked periods of downtime in excess of 10 minutes and cases of parcels being processed too quickly (in less than 1.25 seconds), CNIL claims. The supervisory authority considered such a system excessive, since it can force employees to justify each break.
In addition, Amazon did not properly inform staff and visitors about video surveillance measures, which violates EU data protection legislation, the regulator noted.
CNIL decided on the fine based on the results of inspections conducted after the publication of reports in the press about the principles of operation of Amazon warehouses, and receiving several complaints from staff.
