October 20, Fineko/abc.az. The drop in the water level in the Caspian Sea almost by 2 m over the past 20 years has seriously jeopardized the operation of the country's second largest power plant, located in Shuvelan settlement, which provides electricity to more than 40% of the territory of Baku.

In order to get the Severnaya power plant out of the danger of stopping in the near future and save the station, construction of a 540-m-long overpass deep into the Caspian Sea and water pumping stations in 2 places were started, allowing taking urgently cold water from depth of 8 m.

ABC.AZ reports that Azerenergy Public Relations Center’s head Teymur Abdullayev told about this to journalists.

The gradual drop in the water level created a serious problem for the station taking cooling water, and then it would be inevitable that power plants Severnaya-1 and Severnaya-2, which in the coming years produce the largest amount of energy and have a total capacity of 800 MW, will completely cease their activities in the near future. On the other hand, the construction of new overpasses and water pumping stations will not only save the stations, but also the cooling water will have a lower temperature of 2.6 degrees Celsius due to the fact that it is taken from a greater depth.
