November 6, Fineko/abcnews. EU tech regulators officially charged social media platform TikTok on Friday with breaching the Digital Services Act (DSA) over the mental health risks posed by its recommender system.
The European Commission noted that the "For You" feed traps users—especially minors—in addictive "rabbit holes" of repetitive content focused on mental health struggles and body image.
If the preliminary findings are confirmed, TikTok's parent company ByteDance could face fines of up to 6% of its total global annual turnover. Brussels is demanding structural changes to the platform's recommendation algorithm to prioritize explicit user preferences over screen viewing time.
