US Interest Expenses Hit Unprecedented Record of $1.05 Trillion

10:31 - 19.10.2026

October 19, Fineko/abc.az. According to US Treasury data, net interest expenses for fiscal year 2026 rose over 8% year-on-year to reach a record $1.05 trillion.

The surge in costs is driven by growing national debt, which has crossed $32 trillion, and higher average Treasury yields rising to 3.52%. The Peter G. Peterson Foundation expects interest spending as a share of GDP to reach 3.2%, surpassing the previous 1991 record. While economists do not foresee an immediate debt crisis, they warn that mounting interest costs are steadily eroding the country's fiscal capacity.
