Dollar Steadies, Euro Weakens After French Protests Turn Violent

10:11 - 19.10.2026

October 19, Fineko/abc.az. The US dollar edged up from near its monthly lows as violent cost-of-living protests in France put downward pressure on the euro. The single currency slipped 0.1% to $1.1230, helping steady the greenback index at 101.82.

French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the weekend unrest in a televised address. Market analysts noted that elevated political risk and widening French-German bond spreads near 140 basis points would likely keep euro rallies capped.

Meanwhile, the dollar was flat against the Japanese yen at 158.09, while the offshore Chinese yuan strengthened to 6.6811 per dollar following stronger-than-expected third-quarter GDP data from China.
