September 30, Fineko/abc.az. The US Congress has approved a bill providing for the official cessation of the issuance of 1-cent coins, which have been in circulation for more than 230 years. Passed by the Senate, the document has been presented to President Donald Trump for approval.

The US Mint had already announced in November 2025 that it had struck the final 1-cent coin for circulation and halted production.

The lack of demand for the penny and a sharp rise in production costs are cited as the main reasons for the decision. Over the past 10 years, the cost of producing a 1-cent coin has risen from 1.42 cents to 3.69 cents. With the law taking effect, the US is expected to save approximately $56 million annually.
