September 8, Fineko/abc.az. The United Kingdom paid its highest borrowing costs since at least 1998 during a government bond issuance, issuing £4.25 billion ($5.7 billion) in Treasury Gilts maturing in January 2056 at a record yield of 5.8168%. Jointly organized by BofA, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, Santander, and UBS, the transaction saw robust institutional interest, with the order book reaching £85 billion to cover the offering 20 times over.

The surge in UK borrowing costs is driven by persistent energy-led inflation risks, widening fiscal deficits, and large-scale corporate bond sales in sterling, including Amazon.com's debut issuance. Market analysts noted that despite historic yield levels, the overwhelming demand demonstrates strong global appetite for long-dated British sovereign debt at current return rates.
