September 2, Fineko/abc.az. Rising energy costs driven by global supply disruptions pushed Eurozone annual inflation to 3.3% in August, well above the European Central Bank’s (ECB) 2% target. Swap markets are now almost fully pricing in an interest rate hike at the ECB’s upcoming September 10 meeting.
Central Bank of Ireland Governor Gabriel Makhlouf told the Financial Times that the ECB must be prepared to raise rates further if inflation moves in the wrong direction.
Citing stronger-than-expected GDP growth in the bloc, Makhlouf noted that the current deposit rate of 2.5% remains below the restrictive threshold, which he sees starting above 2.75%.
