US Threatens Chilean Officials Over Approval of Subsea Cable Project With China

13:20 - 22.08.2026

August 22, Fineko/abc.az. The Chilean government has approved a proposal by China's state-owned telecom giant, China Mobile, to lay a subsea fiber-optic cable connecting the port city of Valparaíso to Hong Kong.

Following the decision, a US Embassy official threatened to impose entry bans into the United States on involved Chilean officials and their immediate families. The high-tension meeting lasted just 6 minutes.

A similar permit had been granted in early 2026 but was abruptly canceled days later under heavy diplomatic pressure from Washington.
