Ukraine’s EU Accession Could Destabilize the Corn Market

July 10, Fineko/abc.az. Ukraine’s potential accession to the European Union could destabilize the regional corn market due to unequal manufacturing and operational conditions.

According to experts from the French General Association of Corn Producers (AGPM), these structural concerns are driven by key market factors: significantly lower production expenditures in Ukraine, the domestic use of pesticides currently prohibited within the EU, and the dominance of large-scale corporate agricultural holdings. Ukraine remains one of the world's leading agricultural exporters, producing 31 million tons of corn in 2025, with roughly 75% allocated for export and half of those volumes destined for the EU market.

Analysts estimate that under full EU membership by 2030, Ukraine’s corn output could expand to 39 million tons, potentially triggering financial losses of up to €663 million for French producers. While agricultural experts consider this rapid expansion scenario unlikely, it continues to fuel severe anxieties among European farmers.
