While EU nations agreed to drop tariffs on US imports, the US maintained a 15% tariff on EU commodities. Europe’s prolonged ratification delays triggered strong friction from Washington; on May 1, Trump hiked tariffs on EU cars and trucks to 25%, giving the bloc a hard deadline until July 4 to execute the deal or face stiffer penalties.

• EU Safeguard Provisions: Though Trump’s ultimatum forced a rapid legislative track among EU member states, EP representatives demanded the integration of concrete retaliatory mechanisms.
