June 10, Fineko/abc.az. The United States energy landscape has reached a major milestone as solar power generation surpassed coal-fired electricity for the first time in history.
According to global energy think-tank Ember, ABC.AZ reports that solar energy accounted for 12.8% of total US electricity production last month, while coal’s share dropped to 12.2%.
Driven by AI Demand: The solar boom is heavily accelerated by tech companies racing to power energy-hungry Artificial Intelligence (AI) data centers with cheap and fast-to-deploy options. In May, solar output jumped 17% year-on-year, whereas coal generation slid by 11%.
Fossil Fuels Still Dominate: Despite this clean energy milestone, the US power grid remains reliant on fossil fuels, with natural gas maintaining its position as the dominant power source at 37% of the total market share.
