June 2, Fineko/abc.az. BP, as the operator of the Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli (ACG) block development project, plans to start producing deep–lying oil in September of this year, ABC.AZ informs, quoting Gordon Birrell, BP's vice president for production and operations.
According to Birrell, ACG is a field of unique scale and complexity, where free gas lies both above and below the oil layers.
"At the very bottom of the deeper layer, we found a thin oil fringe between the layers of gas and water. We drilled a well to get more detailed information about this oil fringe. We plan to start production from this well in September of this year," Birrell said.
He added that the presence of oil in deep-lying formations was not excluded.
"When we drilled the gas well, we knew that there was an oil ring between the water and the gas. We had such information. We knew that we could potentially encounter such an oil ring. But to clarify, we drilled a well. The well is currently being drilled into this particular oil ring, and oil production must begin from there in order to understand its potential and the overall size of this oil ring. To get more information, you need to wait for production from this well. We expect this well to start production around September, and this will give us more information about the newly discovered oil ring to understand its volume," Birrell said.
