Share of dollar deposits in Azerbaijan drop from 80% to 28%

May 6, Fineko/abc.az. The Central Bank of Azerbaijan believes that there is no need to change the percentage of insurance of deposits placed in banks in US dollars (currently 2.5% per annum), ABC.AZ informs, quoting CBA governor Taleh Kazimov.

"Previously, the share of dollar deposits exceeded 80%, now it is 28%. Our goal was to reduce this figure to 20-25%. Neither a decrease below this level nor its excess is of particular interest to us and is not a basis for making proposals to the Board of Trustees of the Deposit Insurance Fund.

Today, the problem is that banks attract deposits in foreign currency and do not always understand where to place them. They can be placed in foreign securities, where the yield is about 4-4.5%. Foreign currency loans can only be given to legal entities with export earnings, and demand for them is low," he said.
