November 25, Fineko/abc.az. Almost half of the recoverable reserves have been extracted in the Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli (ACG) block of fields located in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea.
ABC.AZ reports that BP's ACG development manager Afghan Huseynov made this statement at the SPE-2025 Caspian Technical Conference in Baku.
According to Huseynov, one of the main goals of the BP partnership is to prevent production cuts at the field: "I would like to highlight a number of investments aimed at changing the downward trend. The largest seismic investments that we are making in the Caspian basin are an example of this. This five-year program, which we started two years ago, is designed to better understand reservoirs, map static characteristics, and, in particular, the dynamic characteristics of secondary reservoirs. ACG still has great potential, and we have reached half of the recoverable reserves. We have a lot of work to do at this field," he said.
Huseynov noted that in the oil industry, with the exception of several industries on a global scale, most of the cost is generated by base production:
"In ACG, 95% of the cost is associated with base production. Therefore, it is extremely important that the producing wells are adequately supported by injection capacity," he stressed.
The BP representative added that drilling wells in the Caspian Sea is a complex process: "Drilling horizontal wells is one of the most important achievements that we’ve achieved in this area so far. According to our calculations, in order to maintain stable production in conditions of depletion of reservoirs and reduced field conditions, we need to access 30% more reservoirs annually. Imagine that the platforms are limited, the number of wells that can be drilled is limited, but access to more reservoirs is necessary. In this regard, horizontal and multi-barrel wells have played a crucial role in achieving production goals," Huseynov added.
