August 5, Fineko/abc.az. Azerbaijan is one of the three countries receiving the largest volume of investments in transport infrastructure within the framework of the Central Asian Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) Program.
This is stated in a new report by the Asian Development Bank (EBRD).
Since its launch in 2001, the CAREC program has mobilized a total of more than $51 billion for 276 regional projects aimed at reducing economic inequality and strengthening regional integration by supporting trade and transport infrastructure development.
The largest investments were made in the transport sector - 67.4% of the total, or $ 34.3 billion. Of this amount, 16.3% accounted for Azerbaijan, which gave it the 3rd place among the member states after Kazakhstan (24.6%) and Uzbekistan (19%).
Investments are mainly aimed at developing multimodal transport networks, facilitating cross-border trade and creating regional economic corridors. These corridors include those that are of strategic importance for Azerbaijan's connectivity within the South Caucasus and beyond.
$1.4 billion has been allocated for trade promotion and trade policy measures, or 2.7% of the total investments. The leaders in this area are the People's Republic of China (38.9%), Pakistan (22.2%) and Mongolia (16.1%).
