Trump wants to rebuild Asia's energy supply with American gas

February 25, Fineko/abc.az. The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump is seeking to rebuild economic relations with East Asia, tying regional allies to Washington by increasing investments in American fossil fuels, in particular LNG.

ABC.AZ reports, referring to Reuters officials, that Asian countries have already accounted for more than a third of the liquefied natural gas shipped to the U.S. last year.

Japan's participation in Trump's new strategy is crucial, experts say in an interview with Reuters. The country is the world's second largest buyer of LNG, a major investor in energy infrastructure and a trading hub with excess LNG, which can help open up new markets for American gas in Southeast Asia.

"If the Trump administration gets its way, American LNG will flow in huge quantities to Japan and South Korea, and then it will continue to flow."… Thus, Southeast Asia will become economically dependent on the United States," Kenneth Weinstein, head of the Hudson Institute, a Japanese think tank.
