August 26, Fineko/abc.az. American ride-hailing and food delivery giant Uber Technologies has been slapped with a staggering €290 million fine by Dutch authorities for violating the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
ABC.AZ reports that the Dutch Data Protection Authority (DPA) said the company breached the regulations by storing sensitive information about its European drivers on servers located in the United States.
The data in question includes bank account details, photographs, personal identification documents, and in some cases, criminal records and medical information. The complaint about the violations was initially filed by drivers in France, but the fine was issued in the Netherlands, where Uber's European headquarters is situated.
Uber has announced its intention to appeal the decision.
