August 31, Fineko/abc.az. U.S. President Donald Trump's proposed 50% tariff on Canadian automobile imports poses a major threat to Japanese automakers Toyota and Honda, which together account for over 75% of all vehicles produced in Canada.
Analysts warn that if the proposed tariffs take effect on January 1, both automakers could be forced to shut down assembly lines in Canada. Canadian-built vehicles accounted for nearly 25% of Honda's U.S. sales and 17% of Toyota's last year, making them the most vulnerable to doubling the current 25% levy.
Industry analysts at Pelham Smithers Associates noted that tariffs at this level could effectively devastate Canada’s automotive manufacturing sector and severely disrupt supply chains catering to the U.S. market.
