Oil Rocks field, administratively part of Pirallahi district, is located in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea, 110 km east of Baku city and 50 km southeast of Pirallahi Island. Due to the fact that there are natural griffins in the area of the Oil Rocks, the stones thrown onto the surface of the sea are colored black, so this place used to be called ‘Black Rocks’.

In December 1948, the first construction team set off from Pirallahi Island on the "Transporter" boat to the ‘Black Rocks’, where a 14 sq m apartment building was built for the drilling crew and the construction of a drilling well was carried out.
