Mutton prices rise in Azerbaijan

January 15, Fineko/abc.az. In recent days, prices for mutton and lamb have been rising in Azerbaijan.

ABC.AZ reports that mutton, which until recently was offered at 16-17 manats per kg, is sold in some places in Baku even for 20 manats. What is the reason for the price increase?

Expert economist Khalig Mammadov says that currently, since sheep have  breeding season, they are brought to the market in small numbers:

"Ultimately, demand exceeds supply and drives up prices. Another reason is that feed prices in the world, including in Azerbaijan, have risen. It also has negative impact on the development of sheep farming and increases meat prices. Semi-intensive and intensive methods are necessary to prevent the reduction of the number of sheep, to achieve effective and sustainable development in animal breeding. There are conditions for the development of sheep farming in Azerbaijan. Special attention in the country should be paid to breeding sheep breeding, it is urgently necessary to create cooperatives in this area, the development of family farms should be expanded on the basis of a special concept."
