November 13, Fineko/abc.az. Apple is to pay $25 million in fines and compensation as part of settlement of the employment discrimination case.
The U.S. Department of Justice informs that according to the agreement, $6.75 million of this amount is intended as a fine to the U.S. Treasury, and more than $18 million will be used to compensate those persons who may have suffered from discrimination.
The investigation began in 2019, when Apple was suspected of preferring immigrants to U.S. citizens and green card holders when hiring. In the opinion of American authorities, such actions of the corporation violated federal laws prohibiting discrimination on the basis of citizenship.
In addition to the fine, Apple is required to conduct broader selection of personnel and train its employees in anti-discrimination laws. The company admitted that it "inadvertently did not follow the standards of the U.S. Department of Justice".
According to the Department, Apple did not post vacancies on its website that fall under the Permanent Labor Certification Program (PERM), and required paper applications by mail instead of electronic ones, which contradicts generally accepted standards.
