September 25, Fineko/abc.az. Nakhchivan is an ancient region of Azerbaijan. Unfortunately, in 1920, the Soviet authorities separated Western Zangezur from Azerbaijan, thus interrupting the geographical connection between the main part of Azerbaijan and Nakhchivan.

ABC.AZ reports that Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said about this on September 25 during a joint press statement with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

"When Armenia began to pursue occupation policy against Azerbaijan, they had territorial claims to Nakhchivan as well. There were also fierce battles. And it was at that time, under the leadership of Heydar Aliyev, the great son of Azerbaijan, who was then the head of the autonomous republic, Nakhchivan put the enemy in place and was able to defend its territory," the president said.
