August 23, Fineko/abc.az. The BRICS countries should strive to abandon the US dollar when trading with each other, and this should not be taken as an attempt to challenge the US currency, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said on Tuesday, according to ABC.AZ reports.
"If I'm trading with China, then why should I use dollars for this? Brazil and China are large enough countries to use their own currency or another base currency," EFE quoted him as saying.
The President of Brazil assured that such an approach "does not mean a denial of the importance of the US dollar." He also assured that the BRICS should not be perceived as a bloc competing with the West.
The President of Brazil is attending the BRICS Leaders' Summit in South Africa this week.
