September 1, Fineko/abc.az. Music publishing giants Sony Music Publishing and Warner Chappell Music, alongside co-plaintiffs, have filed a lawsuit against AI company Anthropic and its co-founders Dario Amodei and Benjamin Mann in California federal court.
The complaint accuses the firm of unlawfully scraping, torrenting, and downloading tens of thousands of copyrighted lyrics and sheet music from unauthorized databases to train its Claude AI models. The disputed catalogue includes iconic works from top global artists such as The Beatles, Taylor Swift, and Mariah Carey.
Labeling the practice as one of the largest intellectual property thefts in history, the publishers are seeking statutory damages of up to $150,000 per infringed work and demanding the destruction of all unlawfully obtained training data, potentially exposing Anthropic to billions of dollars in liabilities. In response, Anthropic rejected the allegations, stating that it disagrees with the claims and intends to defend itself vigorously in court.
