July 21, Fineko/abc.az. The UK's new Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, has confirmed the cancellation of the controversial digital ID card project launched last year under previous leader Keir Starmer.
The administration stated that resources saved from scrapping the scheme—estimated at £1.8 billion—will be redirected to ease household living costs, including funding tax relief on energy bills.
The plan was shelved following widespread public opposition and a historic petition signed by nearly 3 million citizens concerned over privacy and state surveillance.
