June 5, Fineko/abc.az. The new limits on the amount of interbank commissions (interchange fee) applied when paying for goods and services with bank cards in the country have entered into force in Azerbaijan.
ABC.AZ reports that for pharmacies and supermarkets, the maximum commission rate is set at 1.25%, for gas stations - 0.75%, and for other categories of retail and service enterprises - no more than 1.5%. However, certain limit values are not provided for some types of activities.
Commenting on the innovations, economist Khalid Kerimli noted that interchain is a commission that one bank pays to another when processing a card transaction.
"For example, if a customer pays with a card from one bank through a POS-terminal operated by another bank, a corresponding commission payment is made between financial institutions. This commission is formed within the cooperation between banks and trading enterprises," the expert explained.
According to Kerimli, the main purpose of setting new limits is to further stimulate non-cash payments.
The economist also stressed that the regulation of this area is carried out by the Central Bank. By setting limits on interbank fees, the regulator seeks to create more favorable conditions for expanding the network of POS-terminals and stimulating the growth of non-cash payments.
