June 1, Fineko/abc.az. The U.S. Congress is considering a new bill that could completely block the sale, import and production of Mercedes-Benz cars in the American market, ABC.AZ reports with reference to TV channel CNBC.
According to the source, the legislative initiative proposes to impose a strict ban on commercial activities in the U.S. for companies associated with the governments of "hostile countries".
The German premium brand is under threat due to the structure of its key shareholders, where a significant share belongs to Chinese capital:
• BAIC: The largest shareholder of Mercedes-Benz is Chinese state corporation BAIC, which owns almost 10% of the shares.
• Li Shufu: Another 9.69% stake in parent company Mercedes-Benz Group AG belongs to Chinese billionaire and founder of Geely Li Shufu.
If the bill is passed, Mercedes-Benz risks losing one of its main sales markets due to the presence of Chinese government agencies and businessmen in the group's capital.
