Italy again considers project of a nuclear power plant because of rising energy prices

March 16, Fineko/abc.az. Italy is once again thinking about the construction of nuclear power plants amid a sharp rise in gas and electricity prices, which affects the incomes of citizens and companies.

ABC.AZ informs that Giorgi Meloni's government considers the peaceful atom as a way to reduce the country's dependence on imported gas and stabilize the economy, holding talks with experts from Canada, France, the U.S. and South Korea.

The main obstacle is the opinion of the population: Italy has already expressed its opposition to nuclear power plants twice in referendums (1987 and 2011), and the last plant was closed almost 40 years ago. Politicians will have to convince citizens of the benefits of nuclear energy, while elections are coming soon in the country, and any unpopular decision could cost seats in parliament.
