Japan launches world's largest nuclear reactor

16:49 - 21.01.2026

January 21, Fineko/abc.az. Tokyo Electric Power (TEPCO) is launching Reactor No. 6 at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant, the most powerful in the world with total capacity of 8.2 GW. The capacity of the sixth reactor is 1.36 GW.

ABC.AZ reports that the launch was originally scheduled for January 20, but it was postponed a day due to a malfunction of the emergency warning system. Connection to the grid is expected by the end of next month, and all electricity will be used for Tokyo.

Reactor No. 7 of the plant is to be commissioned by 2030. The remaining reactors from the first to the fifth are not subject to rapid start-up.

After the Fukushima-1 accident in 2011, Japan shut down 54 reactors. Since 2015, 15 have already been restarted, 18 more are in working condition and can be introduced. Country's PM expects that development of nuclear energy will reduce Japan's dependence on energy imports.
