Reasons why Azerbaijan increases oil purchases in Kazakhstan

November 20, Fineko/abc.az. Azerbaijan increased crude oil purchases in Kazakhstan up to 87,300 tons in the first 3 quarters of 2025 (a rise of 152% against Jan-Sept 2024).

ABC.AZ informs that the cost of imported crude oil grew by $48.3 million and made up 112% year-on-year.

Last year, our country bought a total of 34,600 tons of crude oil for $22.8 million from Kazakhstan.

Azerbaijan also purchased oil from Central Asian countries in the previous year. For example, imports stopped in 2025, although 131,700 tons (- 75.8 million) of crude oil were imported from Turkmenistan in the first 3 quarters of last year, the State Statistics Committee said.

The sharp increase in imports from Kazakhstan is an integral part of country's strategy to diversify oil exports from Russian routes.

Amid the Russian-Ukrainian war and sanctions, Kazakhstan is stepping up transportation through Azerbaijan. Currently, negotiations are underway between the two countries on transportation of up to 3 million tons of oil annually through Baku-Supsa pipeline. This belt stretches from the Sangachal Terminal to the Georgian port of Supsa and can transport around 5 million tons of oil per year.

In this regard, in March 2025, the main oil companies of both countries announced that they were negotiating in this regard.
