April 4, Fineko/abc.az. The Canadian authorities are imposing duties of 25% on all cars imported from the United States that are not subject to the North American Trade Agreement (USMCA), ABC.AZ informs, quoting Prime Minister Mark Carney.
"Today I am announcing that the government of Canada will respond to American tariffs in the same way as the U.S. and will impose 25% duties on all vehicles imported from the U.S. that are not subject to CUSMA (Canadian name for USMCA, a trilateral agreement between the U.S., Mexico and Canada)," Carney said..
He clarified that the Canadian retaliatory measures will not affect the supply of spare parts from the U.S., as well as cars from Mexico.
According to the PM, Ottawa plans to allocate up to 8 billion Canadian dollars ($5.6 billion) received from the new tariffs to support the Canadian automotive sector.
The announced measures, Carney said, will remain in effect until the U.S. lifts its tariffs on Canadian cars. The PM added that Ottawa would react immediately if Washington decided to impose new duties on Canada.
