Energy crisis in Lebanon - the country plunged into darkness

12:13 - 17.01.2023

January 17, Fineko/abc.az. An energy crisis has broken out in Lebanon, which is going through difficult economic period. Fuel-powered electricity generating enterprises have stopped working since 2019 due to the deepening economic crisis in the country. As of 2021, electricity is supplied on most days for an average of 2 hours, and at other times of the day citizens use electricity through generators, which is very expensive. And recently, the state provides citizens with electricity for only one hour.

ABC.AZ reports that Walid Fayyad, the Minister of Energy & Water Resources of Lebanon, made a statement to the press about the energy crisis in the country. Fayyad said that a plan has been developed for a legal and comprehensive resolution of the crisis. The minister added that the inability to elect a president since October 2022 has created an "administrative vacuum". He warned that if this situation persists, it could threaten national unity.

Recalling that in August 2022, the government approved a budget of $600 million to increase electricity generation in the country to 4 hours a day, Fayyad said that the Central Bank refused to pay this amount. The minister added that a budget of $600 million is needed to provide 4 hours of electricity per day for the next 5 months.
