July 20, Fineko/abc.az. The European Commission has imposed a record fine of €550 million (US$629 million) on the AliExpress platform, owned by Chinese giant Alibaba, for violating the Digital Services Act (DSA) and failing to control the sale of illegal, unsafe and counterfeit products.

This is the largest financial penalty ever imposed by the EU within its content and product moderation rules.

According to European Commission Executive Vice-President Henna Virkkunen, selling products that do not meet environmental and safety standards poses risks to consumers and creates unfair competition. AliExpress, which has called the decision "disproportionate", is required to submit a plan to address the violations by October 20.
