The Cost of AI: Microsoft’s Carbon Emissions Surge by 25%

July 9, Fineko/abc.az. Microsoft Corp. announced a major setback in its environmental layout, reporting a 25% increase in its carbon emissions for 2025 driven by accelerating capital investments in artificial intelligence data centers.

According to ABC.AZ tracking the group’s annual sustainability report, Microsoft's aggregate carbon footprint reached 20 million metric tons of CO2 equivalent, climbing up from the 16 million metric tons recorded in the prior cycle. The tech giant attributed the increase to new hyper-scale data center infrastructure and the strategic suspension of certain renewable energy credit procurements.

Corporate executives noted that while AI infrastructure continuously accelerates demands for power, water, and building materials, sustainable clean-tech solutions are failing to scale fast enough to bridge the deficit. Consequently, Microsoft is restructuring its climate offsets, pulling back from new carbon storage agreements, and has recently signed a structured utility contract with Chevron Corp. to source electricity from a large-scale natural gas plant in West Texas to power its newest digital systems.
