July 7, Fineko/abc.az. The annual revenues of the innovative sector in Azerbaijan are approx. 1 billion manats, and the volume of exports - $100 million, while the goal is to increase these indicators at least 10-fold, MP Azer Amirslanov said at today's Milli Majlis plenary session.
According to the MP, Azerbaijan’s Digital Economy Development Strategy 2026-29 essentially envisages transition to a new model of economic growth based on innovations: "The results of this strategy will be measured by growth of digital sector's share in the national economy and in the export structure. Currently, these indicators do not fully reflect the potential of our country. The strategy aims to increase these indicators by at least 10 times. To achieve this, it is necessary to create more favorable conditions for an innovative ecosystem that generates new added value. The legislative package under discussion serves this very purpose."
The MP pointed out that in order to be ready for global competition, Azerbaijan must develop highly competitive human capital, as the innovative economy primarily relies on human capital.
"To achieve this, the formation of an enlightened digital society, development of a modern education system, and creation of favorable environment that encourages innovations are key conditions. Currently, the global digital economy is worth approx. $24 trillion, making up 21% of global GDP. This means that nearly 1 dollar out of every 5 dollars of added value created in the world accounted for the digital economy. The annual growth rate of the digital sector is 8-9%, which is approximately 3-fold higher than the growth rate of the traditional economy at 3.1%."
Amirlanov said that the global export of digital services has already exceeded $4 trillion: "All of this shows that in the future economy, the main export product will not be raw materials, but high-value-added technological services."
