July 1, Fineko/abc.az. In Azerbaijan, over the past 5 months, the volume of cash US dollars purchased by banks from the population exceeded their sale, and this trend has been ongoing almost since March 2025.
ABC.AZ reports, citing the Central Bank of Azerbaijan, that according to statistical data on cash currency conversion transactions between banks and the population, for Jan-May 2026, banks sold foreign currency to the population for $489.3 million, while they bought currency from the population for $763.2 million.
As a result, the currency purchased by banks from the population exceeded the sales by $273.9 million. This means that the population contributed $274 million in cash to the banks.
This is the highest net sale of foreign currency in the same period in at least the last five years. For comparison, in the first 5 months of 2025, the population sold $138 million in foreign currency to banks, while in 2023, they sold $60.3 million in net foreign currency. In 2024, on the other hand, banks sold more foreign currency to the population than they bought, resulting in net loss of $483.7 million.
Over Jan-May 2026, banks bought more foreign currency from the population than they sold. In particular, in May, banks sold foreign currency to the public for $71.4 million, while they bought currency from the public for $180.6 million.
