April 30, Fineko/abc.az. The Manhattan Prosecutor's Office has handed over 657 antiquities worth approx. $14 million to India, seized during investigations of trafficking networks.
ABC.AZ reports that the artifacts are linked to the activities of smugglers Subhash Kapoor and Nancy Wiener. The ceremony was attended by the Consul of India in New York, Rajlakshmi Kadam.
Among the returned objects is a bronze statue of Avalokiteshvara worth $2 million, stolen in 1982 and seized in New York in 2025. A $7.5 million red sandstone Buddha statue, previously discovered in a warehouse, and a statue of dancing Ganesha, stolen in 2000 and sold with forged documents, were also returned.
The investigation has been conducted for more than 10 years in cooperation with the American services. An arrest warrant for Kapoor was issued in 2012, and charges were filed in 2019. He was convicted in India in 2022 and is awaiting extradition to the U.S.
