April 8, Fineko/abc.az. Iran could receive tens of billions of dollars annually if it imposes fees for the transit of ships through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
ABC.AZ informs, quoting Hassan Abedini, the head of the Political Information Department of state-owned TV & Radio company IRIB.
He noted that with 32,000 ships passing through the Strait and charging $2 million from each, Iran could receive approx. $64 billion.
Tehran has already billed at least one vessel for $2 million for the right of passage through its territorial waters. Before the conflict in the region, approx. 150 merchant ships used this route every day.
News agency Reuters, citing its own analysis, cites an even more impressive figure. The establishment of such a tariff could bring Iran up to $110 billion a year.
Earlier, on April 2, the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the country is close to finalizing a new regime for regulating navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
