Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has issued an apology to the Indian government regarding child sexual abuse material, deepfake content, and technical lapses across the company's platforms. The apology was conveyed during high-level meetings between Meta executives and Indian government officials.

Tensions escalated in July after New Delhi ordered Meta to purge advertisements and content promoting child sexual exploitation material on Instagram. The scrutiny intensified after Facebook briefly restricted a post by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi due to an operational filtering error, leading to government summons for Meta officials.

India has significantly tightened digital content regulations this year. Under the new rules, social media platforms must remove unlawful content flagged by courts or government bodies within 3 hours — down from the previous 36-hour limit — or risk losing legal immunity protection.
