Azerbaijan may lower pomegranate exports

September 13, Fineko/abc.az. Problems are expected in Russia, which is considered the main market for the export of pomegranate from Azerbaijan, as a result of depreciation of the national currency.

ABC.AZ reports, quoting Farhad Garashov, the chairman of board of the Azerbaijan Pomegranate Manufacturers & Exporters’ Association.

According to Garashov, last year Azerbaijan exported 31,564 tons of pomegranate for $24,000:

"Until now, our traditional export market was Russia and Ukraine. But at the moment we have completely lost the Ukrainian market. Therefore, local exporters have focused on the Russian market, where Azerbaijani pomegranates are in great demand. However, depreciation of the Russian ruble may lead to cheaper Azerbaijani products in this market.”

Association’s head stressed that amid the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, transport costs to European countries have increased significantly:

"However, those who want to export pomegranates to Europe must obtain a Global Gab certificate. Currently, such companies exist in Azerbaijan."
