February 15, Fineko/abc.az. MEPs supported the legislative initiative of the European Council, which implies a ban on the sale of new fossil fuel-powered cars in the EU after 2035.
ABC.AZ reports that 340 MPs voted for the relevant resolution, 279 opposed it, and another 21 abstained.
"This decision encourages the production of cars with zero and low emissions. It contains an ambitious revision of targets for 2030 and a zero emissions target for 2035, which is extremely important to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. These goals create clarity for the automotive industry and stimulate innovation and investment for automakers," said MEP Jan Huitema.
According to the document adopted on Tuesday, an intermediate stage is envisaged by 2030, at which automakers will have to reduce the emissions of new models by 55% for their new passenger cars and by 50% for light commercial vehicles. In 2025, the European Commission (EC) is to present methodology for assessing the level of CO2 emissions and measuring it throughout the life cycle of cars sold within the EU and every two years will publish a report assessing progress in reducing emissions. In addition, from 2025 to 2029, the share of cars with low emissions in total sales is planned to increase to 25% among passenger cars and up to 17% among light commercial vehicles.
After approval in the European Parliament, the document must receive the formal approval of the European Council before it is published in the Official Journal of the EU.
