October 6, Fineko/abc.az. An agreement has been reached with local cargo airline Silk Way Airlines to develop the airport and logistics infrastructure in the territory of the Alat Free Economic Zone.

Delivering speech at the German-Azerbaijani Conference on Strategic Partnership & Relations 2026, AFEZ chairman Valeh Aleskerov said that the project, covering an area of 750 hectares, could become the first airport located in the FEZ territory.

Completion of work on the facility, which began construction in April 2024, is scheduled for the end of this year, and the airport itself is to be commissioned in March or April 2027.

The annual capacity of the new airport at the first stage will reach 500,000 tons of cargo, and in the future this figure is likely to increase up to at least 2 million tons.
