September 14, Fineko/abc.az. European Union member states have extended individual sanctions against Russia by just one week—until September 22—following a deadlock over removing specific individuals from the list.

The disagreement arose after France and Slovakia requested the removal of Uzbek-born Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov. Lacking unanimity, ambassadors agreed to briefly extend the current restrictions covering nearly 3,000 individuals and entities past their September 15 expiration date.

This marks the first time since the onset of the Russia-Ukraine war in 2022 that the EU has renewed its individual sanctions regime for such a short duration rather than the standard six-month period. Maintaining the measures requires unanimous approval from all 27 member states, and diplomatic envoys are set to revisit the issue next week.
