US Consumer Inflation Expectations Remained Unchanged in August

According to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s Survey of Consumer Expectations for August, US consumers' median one-year inflation expectation remained steady at 3.6%, while the five-year outlook held flat at 3%. Meanwhile, the three-year medium-term expectation slightly decreased by 0.1 percentage point to 3.2%. Households reported higher price growth expectations for key expenditures, including gas (4.6%), food (5.3%), medical care (9.1%), and rent (6.6%).

Concurrently, labor market concerns intensified as the probability that unemployment will be higher in a year rose to 44.4%, reaching its highest level since April 2020. Expected household income growth stayed flat at 3.0%, while spending growth expectations rose to 5.2%. Following July’s annual CPI reading of 3.4%, official US August inflation data is scheduled for release on September 11.
