The US Department of the Treasury has significantly broadened sanctions against Iran’s aviation sector, targeting network infrastructure used to transport weapons, personnel, and illicit cargo. Under "Operation Economic Outcast," the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) added 36 entities to its SDN list, comprising 27 Iranian airlines (including Iran Aseman Airlines, Qeshm Air, and Zagros Airlines) and 9 international aviation firms based in Turkey, the UAE, the UK, Malaysia, and Kazakhstan. The measures target front companies leveraged by Tehran to procure US-origin aircraft and sensitive technologies.

OFAC concurrently revoked three key aviation waivers that previously allowed overflights through Iranian airspace and permitted foreign carriers to fly US-controlled commercial aircraft into Iran. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned that entities transacting with Iran’s aviation industry face immediate exclusion from the global financial system, as FinCEN issued an advisory urging financial institutions to flag illicit procurement networks.
