August 30, Fineko/abc.az. The U.S. presidential administration under Donald Trump demanded that Ottawa raise tariffs on Chinese imports to prevent Chinese products from being transshipped through Canada into the United States.
The statement was made by U.S. Permanent Representative to the UN Mike Waltz during an interview on Fox News. According to Waltz, Washington put forward a similar condition to Mexico, which accepted the terms.
Earlier, Canada rejected a proposed U.S. trade agreement, prompting Washington to impose 50% tariffs on select Canadian import categories. In response, Ottawa suspended trade negotiations and announced retaliatory measures. Furthermore, President Trump plans to introduce 50% tariffs on Canadian vehicles, auto parts, and steel starting January 1, 2027.
